Social Studies 7R/A

Social Studies in grade 7 begins a two-year sequence in American History. Unit One introduces students to the five New York State Standards in Social Studies with content that examines "The Global Heritage of the American People Prior to 1500." The course proceeds chronologically through the eras of exploration, colonialism, revolution, and the early republic, with an in-depth examination of the United States Constitution. The year concludes with a unit on Reconstruction. The 7th grade curriculum builds upon and further develops skills, concepts and understandings introduced in the K-6 program. An emphasis is placed upon examining and analyzing historical documents. Constructed-response questions and document-based essays are introduced as well. Advanced students will complete a research-based exit project in June.

Social Studies 8R/A

Eighth grade Social Studies begins with a brief review of the "Reconstruction Era" and then it is on to Industrialization.. From there, students will discover the eras of imperialism, world wars, depression and Cold War. The course concludes with "The Changing Nature of the American People from World War II to the Present."

The five New York State Standards in Social Studies are dominant in the course and students continue to examine historical documents.  Additionally they are given guided practice in writing constructed-response and document-based questions. Advanced students will complete a research-based exit project in June. To Top
