Three-Credit, Four-Credit, and Five-Credit Foreign Language Regents Diploma Sequences The Commissioner's Regulations state that students must complete three units of credit in a language other than English, and pass the Regents Comprehensive Examination in that language as part of the core requirements for an advanced Regents diploma. An advanced Regents diploma may be earned by completing one of the following: 2 THREE-credit sequences in TWO different foreign languages, FOUR credits in one foreign language PLUS one elective sequence, or 1 FIVE-credit sequence in one foreign language. It has been a long-standing policy of the State Education Department that students be awarded three units of credit when they pass the Regents Comprehensive Foreign Language Examination. Students establish a FOUR-credit foreign language sequence by successfully completing one additional year of study beyond that Regents Comprehensive Examination. Students establish a FIVE-credit foreign language sequence by successfully completing two credits of study beyond the Regents Comprehensive Examination.
