Introduction Concerts Practice NYSSMA Requirements

Introduction

Senior High Orchestra is a class in which students practice and learn how to play various string instruments. The instruments include
  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Chello
  • Bass

During the school concerts, the Senior High Orchestra is often accompanied by different percussion and wind instruments. This forms a full symphonic orchestra.

Concerts

The Senior High Orchestra practices year round in order to perform two school concerts; one in the winter and one in the spring.

Practice

The Senior High Orchestra practices daily. The practices are held period 6 every school day. The Orchestra also practices in smaller groups throughout the day in their assigned sectionals.

NYSSMA

NYSSMA is an event that orchestra students can take part in. NYSSMA stands for New York State School Music Association. This event give students a chance to play a solo piece of music, play various scales and also sight read of music given to them by the judges. This gives them a chance to be scored by the judges.

Requirements

In order to become a part of the Senior High Orchestra, you must have some experience playing a string instrument such as the violin, viola, bass or the cello. In addition, successful completion of Junior Orchestra is required.
